Music for harpsichord [8 CD's]
This time the focus on the harpsichord. The first CD of this post was published by the Dutch builders Gerrit Klop. The top of Dutch players were involved and played on 3 different harpsichords and 3 organs. Special attention to the last track, where Bob van Asperen plays a contemporary piece of Louis Andriessen, on a meantone voiced harpsichord.
The concertos for 2, 3 and 4 harpsichords of Johann Sebastian Bach are in a way 'ímpossible pieces'
to record properly. Koopman on Erato was less lucky; I prefer Hogwood's version on L'Oiseau Lyre, where the engineers did a wonderful job. You can clearly follow the musical lines of the different harpsichords. Not on period instruments, but still HIP is the Naxos recording; very pleasant and joyfull playing!
I'm waiting for a revival of the harpsichord under contemporary composers; the harpsichord
deserves it. The compositions of Glass, Rutter and Francaix are just a start I hope.
Klop Keyboard Instruments
Works of Frescobaldi, Scheidt, Scarlatti,
Bach, Haydn and Louis Andriessen
Played by Gustav Leonhardt, Ton Koopman,
Bob van Asperen, Leo van Doeselaar,
Reitze Smits, Hans van Nieuwkoop
and Wout van Andel
Label: STH-CD 19342
Recorded in 1990 & 1992

Essential American Classics
Last year we offered an extensive tribute to the genius of Gershwin, and another - a few months later - to the compelling art of avant-garde Masters like Carter and Feldman. Yet, American music has a lot more to offer, having been, undeniably, one of the most fertile breeding ground for a variety of styles and movements both in the classical and popular repertoire over the last century.
Today, we have assembled a collection of some of the greatest and most diverse personalities of the 20th Century's North American output, which we can fittingly refer to as "The Romantics".
The extraordinary composers who brought new lifeblood into the great European symphonic tradition are presented here. The likes of Copland, Bernstein, Barber, Joplin, Grofé, or, years later, Bolcom, Adams, Corigliano and - to a certain extent - Glass, plus pure visionaries like Charles Ives or French born Edgard Varèse.
Their immortal greatest works are all available here in one single post, including some "lighter" yet poignant samples of the Great American Songbook (Kern, Bernstein, Arlen, van Heusen, Ellington) and the ever mesmerising movies scores by a great master like Bernard Herrmann...
John Adams
Harmonielehre
San Francisco Symphony
Edo de Waart
Nonesuch 79115-2 (1985)

In memoriam Alfred Schnittke
Here's a third "instalment", following the two posts of El Coronel and Davide, in memory of Alfred Schnittke, one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, whose idiomatic music embraced many different styles and genres....
So, just some additions to have an even more complete point of view...Don't miss especially the masterful Choir Concerto and the stunning Concerto for viola....
Enjoy!
P.S. Sadly, a wonderful recording of the complete violin concertos with Kremer and Eschenbach conducting, could not be posted here, due to some scratch on the cds and, so, the near-impossible rip with EAC...
