Third and last volume of our journey into Spanish instrumental world with more late romantic classics (more precious recordings of Goyescas, Noches and Iberia) and the great 20th Century repertoire.
This is mostly focused on Mompou's masterpieces for piano, featuring the whole set of mid-70s recordings by the Catalan composer himself, plus some other outstanding performances of the delicate and sophisticated music of this sometimes overlooked great modern Romantic.

Late Romantic and Modern Spanish School Treasures - Vol. 2
The second and third volumes of our survey on the great Spanish instrumental literature focus on what is universally considered the pinnacle of this magnificent repertoire, Albéniz's cahiers of Impressions for Piano: Iberia, along with the equally popular masterpiece by Granados, Goyescas.
The dense, charming harmonies of Joaquín Turina are here presented in a couple of rare albums: the first is a superb selection of the Sevillan composer's works based on poems by his fellow citizen Gustavo A. Bécquer; the second is a rare, extraordinary account of the cycle Canto a Sevilla by the great Catalan soprano Montserrat Caballé, accompanied by Weissenberg's sensitive piano (the album also contains one of the most delicate versions of Montsalvatge's sublime "Cancion de cuna", from the Cinco canciones negras).
Margaret Price's recital, showcasing the supreme beauty and technique of the late Welsh diva in Granados, Debussy (an otherworldly performance of Mallarmé's Poèmes) etc, is one of my true desert island discs.

Late Romantic and Modern Spanish School Treasures - Vol. 1
Refreshing and elegant, the music of the Spanish masters between the last decade of the 19th century and the new horizons of modernity represents a verdant oasis of tones amid the many revolutionary personalities in those years of dramatic change.
A language eager to capture the echoes of a rich folk heritage and capable to deliver this gracefully through dense chromaticism, extraordinary virtuosic gestures, colourful tonal palette and charming, often very distinctive harmonies (Turina).
Some of the masterpieces presented here (and in the next 2 volumes) are must-haves, altogether, this repertoire strikes us for its consistency, scale and depth.
From the "Lisztian-Chopinesque" density of this new piano school's beginnings, all the way to Montsalvatge's magnificent "classic modernism" well into the second half of the 20th century, let us enjoy some rare as well as some of the most noted recordings of classics like Albeniz's Iberia or de Falla's Noches, Granados' Goyescas or Turina's Canto a Sevilla and Danzas Fantasticas, mostly performed by great Spanish interpreters of the last 50 years.
Manuel de Falla

El sombrero de tres picos **
Daniel Barenboim, Piano
Jennifer Larmore, Mezzo-Soprano

Granados: Goyescas & La Maja dolorosa - Berthold, Medina (1992)
One more from Davide's library of "extinct" recordings.
His comment:
A true masterpiece of the Spanish piano literature – Granados’ Goyescas. This is indeed a most beautiful ultra-rare CD by the German virtuoso Beate Berthold. Born in 1964, we know very little of her. She put out three albums in the early 90s for EMI (1 Rachmaninov/Tchaikovsky solo works and 1 Chopin) and this one here. She was, and I guess still is, a beautiful woman and a superb musician, and well worth listening to before she's forgotten. None of her albums (boasting a stunning recorded sound too) have ever been re-published by EMI. So here's a good chance from 1992 to have her playing for us all the sublime piano suite by the Catalan Maestro. The disc is even more precious as it features the three tonadillas of the Maja dolorosa, where Berthold is joined by Argentinian soprano Graciela Medina - Here’s the APEs and scans… READ MORE...
