The Art of Igor Markevitch - Part 4
The second DVD contains recording of Markevitch's last concert. Here he performed Tchaikovsky "Pathetique" Symphony (very grievous performance) and Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky (with the most adequate tempos for my taste).

The Art of Igor Markevitch - Part 2
The repertoire of Igor Markevitch was not very spread. It includes works by the determine number of composers, such as Stravinsky (first of all), Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Satie, Moussorgsky and some other. Moreover, only a selected compositions, and very rarely he played something "extraneous". Markevitch's style is rather recognizable: from the one hand it is nifty, elegant, graceful. But sometimes - especially in the romantic works, e.g. Tchaikovsky - one can find his style "nitid" and cold.
Markevitch's conducting technique was peculiar too. Once famous conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky said about him (not verbatim): "Every motion of Markevitch hands - even the most minor - had a meaning". Unlike Rozhdestvensky he did not "event" these motions every time, but had a special "set" for every work he conducted.

The Art of Igor Markevitch - Part 1
Igor Markeivtch was such an extravagant personality. He was born in Ukraine, but soon his family moved to Paris and later to Switzerland. His whole life was connected with the most important artists of Western Europe: he was the last protegee of Diagilev, he learned music under Cortot and Boulanger, was a friend of Igor Stravinsky (Markevitch was also called "Igor-junior"), Clara Haskil, literator Jean Cocteau and many other prominent people of the time.
Markevitch started his musical career as a composer. He wrote a number of compositions, which were warmly accepted by the public and critics. So it went on, until he met Hermann Scherchen (like Maderna as well). After visiting his conducting masterclasses, Markevitch finally became a conductor and never wrote music again.
