The great Ukrainian-American Virtuoso's stylistic approach to Bartók's sonatas is quite an old-school one. The Allegro appassionato in the 1st Sonata starts in a roughish, angular manner (pitch is a bit wrinkled too). But, soon after, Stern and Bronfman miraculously focus in the most magical and dreamlike rendition of the quiet middle section. The Adagio is somewhat "religious", whispered and rich with haunting echoes between the two amazing interpreters. Finally, the stunning Allegro molto: I've seldom heard this finale sound so gipsy-like and spirited. The 2nd Sonata offers a chance for an another amazing
tour de force to the old Maestro and his great Israeli piano partner. If you love these sonatas you may well get hooked on this album!
