As I am away from my computer for a protracted period, I am posting individual discs from two boxed sets during my absence for the nine weeks. Here is the third part of the second set.
This is probably the most successful overall cycle of Walton orchestral works, supplemented by the choral masterpiece Belshazzar's Feast. A British orchestra in fine condition under its then American chief conductor, Andrew Litton. Litton demonstrates a strong affinity with Walton's music as did Andre Previn earlier.
Third in this Walton sequence, American violist Paul Neubauer offers a shapely and perceptive interpretation of the Viola Concerto with the logical coupling of the late Hindemith Variations (Hindemith gave the first performance of the viola concerto) supplemented by equally glittering performances of the popular orchestral suites from Facade.
